Krutidev & Mangal Hindi Typing Test — Free Practice
Krutidev and Mangal are the two Hindi font systems used in Indian government typing exams and most legacy office software. Mangal is the modern Unicode standard used by SSC, RRB, and most central government exams since 2017. Krutidev is the legacy Remington-style font still required by some state government recruitments, banks, and older private-sector roles. This page gives you free, exam-style 10-minute Hindi typing practice covering both font conventions.

Krutidev vs Mangal — quick comparison
Mangal (Unicode/InScript) is the modern standard. It works in any modern software (Word, Google Docs, websites), renders correctly across devices, and is what SSC, RRB, UPSC, CPCT, and most central government typing exams use. Krutidev (ASCII/Remington) is the legacy standard. It only renders correctly in software that ships with the Krutidev font installed, doesn't display properly on the web, but is still required by certain state government exams (especially in UP, Bihar, MP, Rajasthan for specific posts), several banks, and many older private-sector roles in publishing and law. If you're not sure which to learn, default to Mangal — it's the future and works in more places.
Layout differences that matter
InScript (Mangal) places Hindi characters on QWERTY positions phonetically: क is on T, र is on J, स is on K, etc. Once memorized, it works on any keyboard. Krutidev's Remington layout was designed for mechanical typewriters: characters are placed based on usage frequency from the typewriter era, which doesn't always align with modern Hindi writing patterns. Switching between the two requires retraining muscle memory because the same physical key produces a different character. The practical advice: don't try to learn both at the same time. Pick the one your target exam requires and master it before touching the other.
How to use Typetera for this practice
Hit 'Start practice test' below to load a 10-minute Hindi typing test with the standard Mangal/InScript convention — this is the format SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, and CPCT use. The corpus draws from real Hindi prose covering government administration, education, and general-knowledge topics, matching the style of actual exam passages. For Krutidev-specific practice, you'll need to configure your system's keyboard layout to Krutidev mode (Windows: install a Krutidev IME like Madhuri or Munshi; the typing surface itself doesn't care which layout is producing the characters — Typetera measures what your keyboard outputs). Use the Custom mode to paste actual Krutidev exam passages if you have them.
Which font is right for which exam
Mangal (default): SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, CPCT, UPSC, most central PSU exams, Delhi government posts, modern state recruitments post-2018 in most states. Krutidev (specific): Older UP government posts (some LDC, JA roles still require it), Bihar Vidhan Sabha posts, MP state-level clerical (some), Rajasthan revenue department posts, several public-sector banks for legacy Hindi typing tests, court stenography roles in certain states, publishing/legal industry assessments. Always verify in the exact official notification for your specific exam. State governments occasionally switch — UP, for example, has moved several posts from Krutidev to Mangal in recent years.
Common practice mistakes
The biggest mistake is practicing on one layout and showing up to an exam that uses the other — your speed will be roughly half of what you trained at. The second-biggest mistake is practicing without conjunct drills; SSC and RRB passages have at least one conjunct per sentence, and typists who haven't drilled them stumble repeatedly during the 10-minute test. The third mistake is ignoring punctuation — Hindi passages use Devanagari danda (।) for periods, which is on a specific key that takes time to find under pressure. Build all three (correct layout, conjuncts, punctuation) into your daily 30-minute practice and you'll be exam-ready in 4-6 weeks.
