Tamil typewriting certificate - what TNPSC clerical posts actually ask for

Most pages about "TNPSC typing test" describe a typing test the commission runs during selection, with a words-per-minute threshold you clear on the day. For the clerical posts, that is not how it works. The TNPSC notification for Junior Assistant lists typewriting as a technical qualification you must already hold: a pass in the Government Technical Examination in Typewriting, in a specified combination of grades in Tamil and English. You obtain it beforehand, from the Directorate of Technical Education, and you upload the certificate with your application. This page explains that requirement, what the grades mean in practice, and how to practise for the speed paper - and it is explicit about which figures come from the notification and which come from the examining board.

What the notification actually requires

For Junior Assistant, the TNPSC notification asks for the minimum general educational qualification - a pass in the SSLC public examination or its equivalent - together with a pass in the Government Technical Examination in Typewriting, in one of these combinations: - Higher/Senior grade in Tamil and English - Higher/Senior grade in Tamil and Lower/Junior grade in English - Higher/Senior grade in English and Lower/Junior grade in Tamil The order matters. Where candidates with the first combination are available, they are selected first; the second is considered only if the first is not available, and the third only if neither is. A higher grade in Tamil is therefore not merely a nice-to-have, it changes where you sit in the queue. The certificate must be held on or before the date of the notification, and you upload it with the application. If your result was published after the notification date, you upload proof of the publication of the result instead.

Why this is different from the SSC pattern

For SSC CHSL and RRB NTPC, typing is a stage of the recruitment. You clear the written papers, you are called for a skill test, and you type a passage against a threshold on the day. Nothing is required in advance. For these Tamil Nadu posts it is the other way round. Typewriting is an eligibility condition, checked at application time, and the examination that certifies it is a separate one run by the Directorate of Technical Education on its own calendar. Someone who prepares the way an SSC candidate prepares - practising for a speed test that will be scheduled for them - can find they are not eligible to apply at all. This is the single most common thing written incorrectly about these posts, and it is worth checking your own notification rather than taking any page's word for it, including this one.

What the grades mean

The Government Technical Examination in Typewriting is offered at more than one grade. The two that appear in the clerical notifications are Lower/Junior and Higher/Senior, and the examining board publishes speed standards for each - commonly reported as 30 words per minute at Lower/Junior and 45 at Higher/Senior, in both Tamil and English. The examination is generally described as two papers, a speed test and a paper covering accuracy and formatting, with sittings twice a year. We have not been able to confirm the speed figures, the paper structure or the calendar from the board's own published syllabus, so treat them as orientation rather than as the specification. The figure that governs you is the one in the current syllabus for the grade you are entering.

Practising for the speed paper

Whatever the exact threshold turns out to be for your grade, the preparation is the same, and it is the preparation this site is built for. Type Tamil in Tamil script on a real Tamil keyboard layout - Tamil99 or Tamil InScript, whichever your examination centre uses. Work at the length the paper actually runs rather than in one-minute bursts, because a speed paper measures endurance as much as speed and the last minutes are where accuracy goes. Use the ten-minute duration at the Tamil test, and put your own material into Custom mode when you have past papers to work from. And practise at the accuracy you need before you practise at the speed you want. A typewriting paper marks errors, and a fast page full of them scores worse than a slower clean one.

English as well as Tamil

Every combination in the notification requires a grade in both languages. That is easy to skim past when you are strong in one of them, and it is where candidates lose a cycle: a Higher/Senior grade in Tamil with no English certificate at all does not satisfy any of the three combinations. If you are working towards both, the two are less transferable than they look. English typing on QWERTY and Tamil typing on Tamil99 or InScript build different habits, and time spent on one does very little for the other. Practise both, in the layouts you will be examined in, and give the weaker one more of the week.

  • Read the technical qualification clause before anything else

    It is the clause that decides whether you can apply at all, and it is several pages into the notification. Everything else in your preparation is downstream of it.

  • Aim for the higher grade in Tamil

    The three accepted combinations are ranked, and the two that put you first both require Higher/Senior in Tamil. The same amount of study spent reaching that grade rather than the lower one changes your position in the queue, not just your eligibility.

  • Do not neglect the English certificate

    Every combination requires a grade in both languages. Strength in Tamil does not substitute for an English certificate, and the reverse is also true.

  • Practise on the layout you will be examined on

    Tamil99 and Tamil InScript place characters differently, and switching between them late costs weeks. Confirm which your centre uses, then stay on it.

  • Practise at paper length, not in bursts

    A minute of typing tells you very little about a speed paper. Work at the full duration at least twice a week so the fatigue is familiar before it matters.

  • Treat the certificate as having a shelf life in your planning

    It must be held by the notification date, and notifications do not announce themselves in advance. Sitting the examination at the next available opportunity is worth more than sitting it when you feel ready.

  • Preparing for a test that will never be scheduled

    The most expensive mistake here, and the easiest to make, because almost every page about these posts describes a commission-run typing test. If typewriting is an eligibility condition for your post, no one will call you for a typing test - you will simply not be eligible.

  • Holding a grade in only one language

    Every accepted combination names both Tamil and English. A single certificate, however high the grade, satisfies none of them.

  • Assuming a figure you read online is the one you are marked against

    The speed standards quoted for each grade vary between sources, this page included. The number that applies to you is in the current syllabus for the grade you are entering.

  • Practising Tamil through transliteration

    Typing Roman letters and letting software produce Tamil builds a skill the examination does not test and will not permit. Type in Tamil script from the start.

  • Leaving the English certificate until after the Tamil one

    The two examinations sit on the same calendar. Sequencing them means the second one lands a full cycle later, which can be the cycle in which the notification appears.

  1. Before anything

    Confirm what your post requires

    Find the technical qualification clause in the notification for the post you want, and read which grades in which languages it names. If a current notification is not open, read the most recent one for the same post. Everything below assumes you have done this.

  2. Weeks 1-2

    Layout and accuracy

    Settle on Tamil99 or Tamil InScript and stop switching. Type slowly at whatever speed holds accuracy above 95 percent, in Tamil script, on the ten-minute duration twice a week.

  3. Weeks 3-6

    Speed, in both languages

    Raise speed while holding accuracy. Split the week between Tamil and English rather than alternating months - the two build separate habits and both are examined.

  4. Weeks 7-8

    Full-length rehearsal

    Full-duration runs on unseen material, at the time of day your examination is scheduled. Stop chasing personal bests; practise finishing cleanly at a speed you can hold.

Is Tamil transliteration allowed in the examination?
No. The examination tests typing in Tamil script on a Tamil keyboard layout. Practising by typing Roman letters and letting software convert them builds a skill that will not be available to you in the examination hall.
