Telugu typewriting certificate - what APPSC and TSPSC clerical posts ask for

Pages about "APPSC typing test" and "TSPSC typing test" generally describe a typing test the commission runs during selection, with a words-per-minute threshold you clear on the day. For the clerical posts that is not usually how it works. The notifications list typewriting as a technical qualification you are expected to already hold - a pass in the Government Technical Examination in Typewriting, at a specified grade - obtained beforehand from the state board and uploaded with your application. This page sets out that requirement, what the grades mean, and how to practise for the speed paper, and it is explicit about which parts we could confirm and which we could not.

What the notifications ask for

Junior Assistant, steno-typist and data entry posts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are consistently reported to require a pass in the Government Technical Examination in Typewriting as a technical qualification - the Lower grade for entry-level clerical posts, with the Higher grade required for some senior roles and for certain promotions. We were able to read the Tamil Nadu notification directly, and it sets out exactly this pattern: typewriting is an eligibility condition checked at application time, not a test the commission schedules for you afterwards. For Andhra Pradesh and Telangana we have not read a current notification end to end, so treat the description here as the shape of the requirement rather than as its specification, and check your own notification for the post you want.

Why this is different from the SSC pattern

For SSC CHSL and RRB NTPC, typing is a stage of the recruitment. You clear the written papers, you are called for a skill test, and you type a passage against a threshold on the day. Nothing has to be in hand in advance. Where typewriting is an eligibility condition it works the other way round. The certificate is checked when you apply, and the examination that awards it runs on its own calendar, separate from the recruitment. A candidate who prepares the way an SSC candidate prepares - waiting to be called for a speed test - can find they were never eligible to apply. This is the difference worth checking first, before any of the preparation advice below is worth acting on.

What the grades mean

The examination is offered at more than one grade. The two that appear in clerical notifications are Lower and Higher, and the examining board publishes a speed standard for each - commonly reported as 30 words per minute at Lower and 45 at Higher, in Telugu and in English. We have not confirmed those figures against the board's own syllabus. They are consistent across the sources we found, which is weaker evidence than it sounds, because secondary sources copy each other. The number that governs you is the one in the current syllabus for the grade you are entering.

Practising for the speed paper

Whatever the threshold turns out to be, the preparation does not change. Type Telugu in Telugu script on a real Telugu keyboard layout. Telugu InScript is the Unicode standard and the one government examinations generally use; older non-Unicode fonts such as Anu are a different keyboard entirely and will not help you. Our keyboard setup guide covers enabling InScript on Windows, macOS and Linux. Work at the length the paper runs rather than in one-minute bursts. A speed paper measures endurance as much as speed, and the last minutes are where accuracy goes. Use the ten-minute duration at the Telugu test, and put past papers into Custom mode when you have them. Practise at the accuracy you need before the speed you want. A typewriting paper marks errors, and a fast page full of them scores below a slower clean one.

English as well as Telugu

Clerical work in these states is bilingual, and notifications commonly ask for typewriting in both Telugu and English rather than either alone. Check which your post requires before deciding where to spend your preparation. If both are required, they transfer less than you would expect. English on QWERTY and Telugu on InScript build separate habits, and time spent on one does little for the other. Practise both, on the layouts you will be examined on, and give the weaker one more of the week.

  • Read the technical qualification clause first

    It decides whether you can apply at all, and it sits several pages into the notification. Every other preparation decision follows from it.

  • Find out whether your post needs both languages

    Clerical work in these states is bilingual and notifications often name both Telugu and English. Discovering that after you have spent a cycle on one of them is expensive.

  • Practise on Telugu InScript

    It is the Unicode standard and what government examinations generally use. Older fonts such as Anu are a different keyboard, and practice on one does not carry to the other.

  • Practise at paper length

    A minute of typing tells you very little about a ten-minute paper. Work at the full duration at least twice a week so fatigue is familiar before it counts.

  • Drill conjuncts and vowel signs separately

    In Telugu these carry several keystrokes for one visible character, and they are where a page slows down. Working them in isolation moves your number more than general practice does.

  • Sit the examination at the next opportunity, not when you feel ready

    The certificate has to be in hand by the notification date, and notifications do not announce themselves in advance.

  • Preparing for a test that may never be scheduled

    If typewriting is an eligibility condition for your post, no one will call you for a typing test - you will simply not be eligible to apply. This is the most expensive assumption to get wrong, and the most commonly repeated online.

  • Taking any published speed figure as the one you are marked against

    The numbers quoted for each grade vary between sources, this page included, and we have not been able to confirm ours. The current syllabus for your grade is the only figure that governs you.

  • Practising on a legacy font keyboard

    Anu and similar non-Unicode layouts place characters differently from InScript. Weeks of practice on the wrong one do not transfer.

  • Preparing in only one language

    Where a notification names both Telugu and English, strength in one does not substitute for a certificate in the other.

  • Typing Telugu through transliteration

    Typing Roman letters and letting software produce Telugu builds a skill the examination does not test and will not permit.

  1. Before anything

    Confirm what your post requires

    Find the technical qualification clause in the notification for the post you want, and read which grade in which languages it names. If no notification is currently open, read the most recent one for the same post.

  2. Weeks 1-2

    Layout and accuracy

    Settle on Telugu InScript and stop switching. Type at whatever speed holds accuracy above 95 percent, in Telugu script, at the ten-minute duration twice a week.

  3. Weeks 3-6

    Speed, and conjuncts

    Raise speed while holding accuracy, and give five to ten minutes a day to conjuncts and vowel signs specifically. If your post needs English too, split the week rather than alternating months.

  4. Weeks 7-8

    Full-length rehearsal

    Full-duration runs on unseen material at the time of day your examination is scheduled. Stop chasing personal bests and practise finishing cleanly at a speed you can hold.
