Why type your own text

A general corpus measures general typing. It is the right thing for a first number, and the wrong thing once you know what you actually need to get faster at. Somebody preparing for a transcription exam wants the register of the exam, which is administrative prose full of formal constructions and proper nouns. A developer wants code, which is mostly symbols and camel case. Somebody learning a language wants sentences from their own textbook. None of those look like the sentences a typing site would write for them. Custom mode is the same engine and the same measurements pointed at text you supply, so the WPM and accuracy you get back describe the writing you actually do.

How it works

Open the test, choose Custom, and paste. There is no length limit worth mentioning and no formatting to strip first; line breaks and punctuation are preserved as typed. Three settings sit alongside the box. Case sensitivity decides whether a capital typed as lowercase counts as an error, which matters if you are practising for something scored strictly. Allowing line breaks lets you type a passage with real paragraphs rather than one continuous line. Looping restarts the passage when you reach the end, so a short piece can still fill a long test. Everything else behaves as it does anywhere else on the site: the timer, the live speed, the per-key breakdown at the end, and the results page that tells you which characters cost you the most.

Your text stays in your browser

Nothing you paste is uploaded. The passage lives in the page for as long as the run does and is never sent to a server, because there is no server involved in running a test here - the whole thing happens on your own machine. That matters more for custom mode than for anything else on the site, because the text people paste is often their own: a work document, a piece of writing, a translation they are checking. It is worth saying plainly rather than leaving people to assume. The only thing that persists is the result - your speed, accuracy and per-key figures - and that is stored in your own browser, not in an account, unless you choose to sign in and sync it.

What to paste, if you are not sure

If you are preparing for an exam, use a passage from a past paper. That is the closest thing to practising the real thing, and the register of official prose is genuinely harder to type than ordinary writing. If you want to get faster at work, paste something you wrote last week. The vocabulary you repeat is the vocabulary worth automating. If you are learning a language, paste a paragraph from whatever you are reading. Typing it is a slower, more deliberate pass over the same text, and the accented characters will show up in the per-key breakdown afterwards. And if none of that applies, the ordinary typing test picks a passage for you, which is usually the right answer.

When the built-in corpus is the better choice

Custom text is worse than the corpus for one specific purpose: comparing yourself to anybody else, including your own past self. A score depends heavily on what you typed, so a run on your own easy text and a run on a hard passage are not the same measurement. For a number you can track over weeks, use the same duration and the same built-in settings each time and let the corpus vary the sentences. For working on a specific weakness, use custom text. They answer different questions and it is worth being deliberate about which one you are asking.

    Yes, anything you can paste can be typed, including punctuation-heavy text and code. Turn case sensitivity on if you want capitals to be scored strictly, which is usually what you want for code.

  • Can I loop a short passage to fill a longer test?

    Yes, there is a loop setting beside the text box. With it on, reaching the end of the passage starts it again, so a short paragraph can still fill a five-minute run.

  • Does a custom test measure speed the same way?

    The measurement is identical - correct characters divided by five, per minute, with accuracy alongside. What changes is comparability: a score on your own text is not directly comparable to one on the standard corpus, because difficulty varies with what you pasted.

  • Can I use custom text in Hindi, Tamil or another language?

    Yes. Custom mode does not care which script you paste, so it is the way to practise a language whose corpus is thinner here, or one the site does not carry at all.
